Elderly care Workshop at World Elders Day

State Health Systems Resource Centre - Kerala (SHSRC-K), in collaboration with IMA Nedumangad and HAP (Health Action by People), marked World Elders Day on October 1st at District Hospital Nedumangad, emphasizing the theme: "Ageing with Dignity: Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide." Dr. Ravi Prasad Varma, Professor at AMCHSS, SCTIMST, Trivandrum, inaugurated the event, highlighting the critical role of initiatives like the Fall Prevention Clinic in improving the quality of life for the elderly. The event honored the elderly participants of SHSRC-K’s research study, “Interventions for Prevention of Falls Among Older Persons – A Randomized Control Trial in Kerala.” These participants shared their positive experiences, emphasizing enhanced physical fitness and well-being after participating in the six-month-long fall prevention interventions. District Hospital Superintendent, Dr. Rekha M. Ravindran, announced the launch of a weekly Fall Prevention Clinic at the hospital starting in November, to be held every Tuesday. This initiative reflects the hospital’s ongoing commitment to elderly care.


Distinguished speakers included: Dr. Nancy N, IMA Treasurer and Casualty Medical Officer, Dr. Hema Francis, IMA President, Dr. Anzer Suhad Seth, Oncologist, Dr. Aravind Chandru, SHSRC Research Officer, Sajitha M S, Hospital PRO, Hamisha P G, Dietician, Dr. Sajeena A.S, Junior Consultant, Sheela Paul, Nursing Superintendent, and Dr. Mohammed Thareekh Basheer, WISHS Research Associate.

The presence of ASHA workers was also noteworthy, as they play a vital role in community-based elderly care. The event successfully combined awareness, education, and interactive sessions, reaffirming SHSRC-K’s and the hospital’s dedication to improving the well-being of the elderly in Kerala.
